Homemade garlic toast using sourdough bread isn’t exactly mind-blowing, but…

what if YOU don’t know how good it is?

I have to remember here on The Kitchen Magpie that I have all sorts of cooks at different levels, from beginners and beyond. I wasn’t going to post this recipe and then remembered that a lot of University students here in Edmonton use this website for cooking (I gathered my intel from working with University students a while back that told me my recipes were circulated far and wide on campus. And that was BEFORE we got into co*cktails! Now? Sheesh. I can only imagine!)

Basic cooking skills are GOOD to post. Basic recipes that interest people are GOOD to post. Not everyone has been cooking for years. And you know what?

Even I didn’t think of slicing up sourdough bread and using it as a last resort for homemade garlic breaduntil last weekend.

And therein lies the reasoning for posting everything I learn here on The Kitchen Magpie. I’ve written a cookbook, have #2 in the works, and still….this really never entered my mind.

Sure, things LEAVE my mind at about 5 items per second, but enter my mind? I jump on those and keep them while I can!

Everyone needs a delicious homemade garlic toast recipe and let me tell you, using sourdough will bring your homemade garlic toast to another level.

It’s chewy. It’s tangy. Yes, as my picky brother mentioned when he ate it, it’s NOT soft and fluffy like regular white bread, but that’s why we loved it so much. You can use the garlic butter spread on a baguette as is traditional, but if you are looking for a serious taste sensation, sourdough is the way to go.

The real key here is to SLICE the bread and place it on the baking sheets, with both sides buttered. I admit it, I love those pre-made garlic breads that are sliced and in the frozen section of the grocery store. Ugh. There is just no helping me some days! So I decided that I needed to make my own butter drenched homemade garlic toast.

I will never buy store-bought again, after trying this sourdough version. YUM!

Happy baking guys! Make sure to check out my 5 Ingredient Cream Cheese Alfredo Sauce Recipe as well, it will go great with this homemade garlic toast!

Love,

Karlynn

Fantastic! I microwaved the butter and made it mostly a liquid, then added the garlic and parsley. I added more garlic than original was called for though. I brushed the mixture on the bread! It turned out stupendously good!Homemade Garlic Bread Recipe - Using Sourdough! (13)

Agreed. My perfect sourdough is dipped in buttery clams. Alas, I now live in Nebraska. No clams. But I still love sourdough! I tried a basted (olive oil/garlic) toasted slice flip and added mozzarella/parm. Frankly didn’t work for me. I love this bread so much more than others that I have to find a way to get my land locked spouse to see the ‘light’.

FAQs

Can you use sourdough instead of yeast? ›

Yes you can use sourdough starter instead of fresh yeast, however you would then need to reduce the amount of flour and water used in the bread recipe to account for the flour and water contained in the sourdough starter.

What ingredients should not be in sourdough bread? ›

The inside of the bread should be bubbly and chewy and the bread should have a slightly tangy taste. Real sourdough bread does not contain additives like oil, milk, corn, and dough conditioners. It is made with whole grains and is generally more expensive than regular bread.

What is the secret ingredient in sourdough bread? ›

The signature sourdough flavor comes from a combination of lactic and acetic acids, created as the dough rises and ferments. Refrigerating the dough encourages the production of more acetic acid, which is the tangier of the two. Thus, this bread with its refrigerated starter has the ideal balance of sour flavor.

Is sourdough bread harder to make than regular bread? ›

It depends on which sourdough recipe you follow. Some "no knead" sourdough recipes require fairly minimal hands on time, others can require a few hours of hands on time over a 2 to 3 day period. The good thing about sourdough bread is that you can manipulate the process to suit your own schedule.

Is sourdough bread healthier than yeast? ›

Generally, participants who ate the sourdough bread had lower blood sugar and insulin levels than those who ate the breads fermented with baker's yeast ( 3 , 21 , 22 , 23 ). Sourdough fermentation produces changes in the bread that may help control blood sugar better than bread made using traditional baker's yeast.

Why would you use sourdough instead of yeast? ›

Some of the many health benefits from using a Sourdough Starter include: Less likely to spike blood sugar & has a lower glycemic index. Feeds good gut bacteria for easier digestion. Keeps you fuller for longer.!

Who should avoid sourdough bread? ›

People with a gluten intolerance may find that sourdough is easier to digest, but people with celiac disease will likely still experience symptoms if they eat sourdough bread.

How inflammatory is sourdough bread? ›

The best bread to reduce gut inflammation is bread made from whole grains. Refined grains, such as the grains found in white bread and white pasta, are known to increase inflammation across the whole body. Sourdough bread and rye bread are both good options for an anti-inflammatory diet.

When should you not eat sourdough bread? ›

As a general rule, you should throw out a loaf of sourdough bread when it shows visible signs of mold, when it has an unpleasant odor, or when it doesn't taste right. At this point, mold may be contaminating the bread below the surface, even if you can't see it.

Why do you put vinegar in sourdough bread? ›

There are two main acids produced in a sourdough culture: lactic acid and acetic acid. Acetic acid, or vinegar, is the acid that gives sourdough much of its tang. Giving acetic acid-producing organisms optimal conditions to thrive and multiply will produce a more tangy finished product.

Why do you put honey in sourdough bread? ›

You'll find I use honey in many of my recipes. I love to use it in my no-knead 100% whole wheat sourdough bread because it makes it much softer and less dense than it would be without it. Subbing it in recipes that call for sugar is not usually as simple as a one-to-one sub, though.

What does egg do in sourdough bread? ›

It makes the bread lighter and fluffier. The reason for that is the fat in the yolk that inhibits gluten formation just as any other fat would. This results in a looser dough that can expand and puff up more.

What is the best flour for sourdough bread? ›

The best flour blend for creating a new sourdough starter is 50% whole-meal flour (whole wheat or whole rye) and 50% bread flour or all-purpose flour. I recommend a 50/50 mix of whole wheat flour and bread flour. Why do you need to use these two types of flour?

What is the biggest mistake you can make with your sourdough starter? ›

Give it time. The BIGGEST MISTAKE You Can Make With Your Sourdough Starter: Premature Discarding!

Is it cheaper to buy or make sourdough? ›

Is It Cheaper To Make Your Own Sourdough? Yes it's cheaper to make your own sourdough at home, as oppose to buying it from a bakery.

What's the difference between sourdough and regular yeast? ›

Baker's yeast turns the sugar into alcohol (a very low volume which evaporates away as the dough is baked) and into carbonated gas. Sourdough starters turn the sugar into carbonated gas and lactic (and acetic) acid, which give this bread its sour flavor.

Does sourdough create its own yeast? ›

Majority of the yeast in your sourdough starter actually come from the flour you choose to feed it with. In fact, given that a sourdough starter is created from adding just flour and water, the first micro organisms to colonise in your jar will actually be from the flour you use.

Does a sourdough starter make yeast? ›

Simply put: a sourdough starter is a live fermented culture of fresh flour and water. Once combined, the culture will begin to ferment and cultivate the natural yeasts found in our environment. A small portion is added to your bread dough to make it rise. Commercial yeast IS NOT required.

Does all sourdough bread have yeast? ›

Other natural ingredients can be added but genuine sourdough bread making does not involve the use of baker's yeast, chemical raising agents, so-called processing aids or other additives. Sourdough is often used as shorthand for that starter cuture, and of bread etc. made by the sourdough process.
