You can choose from a variety of presets or create your own custom settings. To set up your document, go to File > New > Document and adjust the options in the dialog box. You can also change your document settings later by going to File > Document Setup or Layout > Margins and Columns. 2 Use master pages

Master pages are templates that you can apply to multiple pages in your document, saving you time and ensuring consistency. You can use master pages to add elements that you want to repeat on every page, such as headers, footers, page numbers, logos, or backgrounds. To create and edit master pages, go to the Pages panel and double-click on the master page icon. You can also create multiple master pages for different sections or layouts. To apply a master page to a document page, drag and drop the master page icon onto the document page thumbnail in the Pages panel.

  • Using styles is one of my new favorite InDesign tools. Why? Because without a doubt, someone will ask you to change a font or font color in a document. If you’ve applied character styles to your text, then changing a character attribute like a headline color throughout your document is as easy as one click. Just change the definition of the character style, and boom! All of your text that has that character style applied to it, automatically changes to the new style. No need to painstakingly click on every text box in your document to update the style. Not only does this save time, but it allows you to quickly test out many styles until you pick a favorite. In a long document, it’s definitely worth the extra steps to set it up.

The tricky part is figuring out your text set up. Get to know the basics of setting up a grid and figuring out your correct line height. You migh also want to learn about aligning your type on a baseline grid so it will always sit on the same height horizontally.

4 Add interactivity

Interactivity is a feature that allows you to add elements that enhance the user experience and engagement of your digital publications, such as buttons, hyperlinks, animations, video, audio, or slideshows. You can use interactivity to create interactive PDFs, EPUBs, or HTML files that can be viewed on computers, tablets, or smartphones. To add interactivity, go to the Window menu and choose Interactive. You will see various panels that let you create and modify interactive elements. You can also preview your interactivity by going to File > Preview on [Device] or using the EPUB Interactivity Preview panel.

5 Export your final product

Exporting is the final step of your desktop publishing process, where you convert your InDesign document into a format that can be printed or distributed online. You can export your document as a PDF, EPUB, HTML, JPEG, PNG, or other formats, depending on your purpose and audience. To export your document, go to File > Export and choose the format and options you want. You can also use the Adobe PDF Presets or the Export for Screens dialog box to optimize your document for print or web.
